A healthy indoor environment is important to you and your family. This includes keeping the air free of biological contaminants or bioaerosols. Some, such as viruses and bacteria, cause infections. Others, like dustmites, moulds, fungi and spores cause allergic responses on the skin or in the respiratory tract. Moulds, mildews, bacteria and dustmites develop in warmth and moderate to high humidity and need little more than a constant moisture supply for survival.

The humidity in your home fluctuates depending on:

• how warm or cool the air is indoors
• how many moisture-producing activities (drying clothes, taking showers, boiling water) are taking place
• whether there is a constant source of moisture (leaks, damp foundations, cellars or attics)
• how much moisture is being vented to the outside

If you can keep the relative humidity of your home below 50% you can reduce problems with dustmites, mould and mildew.

Testers' Tip: If your home is extremely dry and you must use a humidifier, a steam vaporizer or warm mist humidifer is preferable to an ultrasonic or cool mist (impeller-type) humidifier as these send microorganisms from their water tanks into the air. Remember - it is ok to add moisture to indoor air if  the relative humidity is  below 35-40%, but do not exceed a level of 50-55%.
