A true allergy is caused by the immune system producing a specific type of antibody known as immunoglobin E (IgE) as a heightened reaction to external allergens that may enter the body by inhalation, swallowing, injection or contact with the skin, eyes or airways.

Symptoms can include sneezing, shortness of breath, itching, rashes (hives), sickness and abdominal or digestive problems.
