Cow’s milk allergy is typically seen in babies and infants and rarely develops after the age of one. Children can develop cow’s milk allergy if they are formula-fed or breast-fed. The onset is closely related to the introduction of infant formula based on cow’s milk and other dairy products. It affects about 1 in 50 of children, the majority of whom will outgrow their milk allergy by school age. However for some, cow’s milk allergy may be lifelong.
Mild symptoms may include:
• Tummy pain and vomiting
• Itching
• Redness of the skin
• Urticaria (nettle rash or hives), often around the mouth
• Swelling e.g. in the lips
• Cough
Symptoms in severe cases may include:
• Wheeze
• Anaphylaxis (throat swelling/choking, breathing difficulty and
collapse)
Some infants may get a rash on skin contact with milk.
